Machinima Rises

A reNEWed Collaboration

This year has been a great one for developing machinima as a publishing and documenting tool for educators working in virtual worlds. It all started with a discussion at the UnSymposium last fall which led to the machinima track at Virtual World’s Best Practices in Education (VWBPE). At that time I was running the k-12 track for the entire conference but was still able to take some time to review the student created machinima and collaborate with Marianne Malmstrom (Knowclue Kidd) and Kae Novak (Kavon Zenovka).

Spiff Whitfield played MC for that event as well as a second event. Following the success of VWBPE’s machinima fest, we put together a machinima fest for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) conference in Philadelphia. Spiff saved us again at this event as both Kae and I were doing our individual poster presentations at the same time during the first half hour of the fest and Marianne never even entered the room; skyped in for her part of the fest. On arrival I realized this was picking up momentum. People were engaged and interested in the projects presented. I think the competition helps as well.

Following the advice of Brom Stuckey from Quest Atlantis we are going to institute a machinima talk series in Second Life. This will be geared towards educators and how to make machinima an approachable medium for teaching and learning. We will also work coach, mentor, and cajole more submissions for the UnSymposium machinima fest this fall. I think the single most exciting idea to come out of this is the idea to invite previous fest contributors to share the experiences through informal discussion. Altogether this is very exciting and I look forward to the outcomes in the next few months.

Maybe for the next fest I will have a submission. Or have my students do it….
